Multicultural Academy Charter School (MACS) has been awarded first place in the Safer Philly Award category for the 2024 Philly Service Award. These awards celebrated stand-out projects that focused on improving the city's safety through violence prevention, awareness initiatives, and community, and youth-centric programs.
The Philly Service Award is a pioneering city-wide high school competition focused on championing community service projects led by Philadelphia's promising students. Organizers believe in the power of Philadelphia's youth and the transformative change they can bring to their neighborhoods.
The MACS Community Service Club submitted a triad of projects aimed to help better connect and revitalize the Nicetown neighborhood of North Philadelphia. The team cleans up trash around the Broad and Erie intersection. They have also built a community library for students in the area, and have constructed a community garden/meeting space for local events. MACS upperclassmen mentor younger students to ensure these projects flourish.
MACS has long been dedicated to fostering an environment where students from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds can excel academically while developing a strong sense of identity and community. The school’s diverse curriculum includes specialized programs that highlight global perspectives, making it a standout institution in Philadelphia’s educational landscape.
The school was awarded a $20,000 prize, a trophy and participants were awarded individual medals.
