Creative Writing

Course Description

This course is primarily writing based, which means we will be doing a lot of writing. A part of the class will be devoted to the mechanics of the written language, i.e. vocabulary and grammar. A good mechanic has many tools in his toolbox and knows which ones to use for the job at hand. The same goes for a writer. Having a firm grasp of the mechanics of the written English language will allow you greater freedom and mastery over expressing yourself. After all, the purpose of language, written or oral, is to express ourselves and convey meaning.

In regards to the creative part of this course, you will write a minimum of eight projects over the course of the year. Some short, some longer. In addition to trying your hand at poetry, short stories, memoir, and plays, you will practice some of the more formal types of writing, which are essay based.

Don’t worry about your hand getting too tired from all the writing, because a good writer is a good reader. We will take frequent breaks to visit some of the finest literature by some well-known and lesser-known literary greats.
